Get what you want out of life!

Decide to enjoy life!  
Through your choices and actions you can get the most out of life.
How much happiness can you have in your life? You can enjoy as much happiness as you want! Enjoy as much happiness as you want! Enjoying life is an attitude – it doesn’t depend on circumstances. Enjoying life is the result of how you see things. Enjoying life is the result of how you react to events. Enjoying life is a choice. Your choice! Take a good hard look at your life. The choices you made yesterday brought about the life you have today. So, how did you get to have the life you have today?
And, more importantly, how do you plan to live your life in the future?

  • Are you making good use of your life?
  • Do you dread going to school each morning?
  • Are you always rushing around, not accomplishing anything?
  • Is your room full of junk that you can’t be bothered to sort out?
  • Do you often feel that you are not being true to yourself?
  • Do your friends irritate you most of the time?
  • Are you afraid of making mistakes?
  • Are you waiting for someone else to solve your problems?
  • Do you spend most of your free time too tired to move, too lazy to think or too bored to care?

If you answered yes to nay of these questions, it is likely that you are not getting the most out life. You need to find out what you really want in life and then make the effort to move towards a more meaningful life.

Understand your needs  
To be human means to have needs. Those needs differ from person to person, time to time, and place to place. As a child, your needs and wants were probably quite different from those you have today. Think back. What you ate as a toddler is more than likely not what you would want to eat today! What you did for fun then is also not what you would choose to do now! Some needs are simple, for example, you drink when you are thirsty and sleep when you are tired. Other needs are complex, for example, wanting to be loved and respected by others. Human needs are unlimited – while a person is alive, he or she will always want something.

Make priorities in life
Great achievers prioritize their needs in order of importance. They know what they really want in life and are willing to make the sacrifices to their goals.
For many of us, there is a constant tug-of-war going on in our heads as we try to work out what we really want and need in life, we ask, what is essential for our survival, our success and our happiness? And, what would be a ‘nice something extra’ if it were possible to have it all? When we have good self esteem, we know what we want to do, and we are not easily distracted or discouraged from doing it. What do you want to do that’s so important to you that you absolutely insist on doing it. What do you want to do that’s so important to you that you absolutely insist on doing it? Decide on what you want in life. It doesn’t matter whether you want to learn to dance, start your own business or fly to the moon. What does matter is that you want something …. And now, work out what you’ll need to do to get it.

Use your imagination  
Here is a visualization exercise to help you explore what is most important to you. Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted. Have a pen and paper handy. Get comfortable and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths and let go of all your tensions.
Look at your current reality. Ask yourself: “Do I have control over my life and what aspects would I like to change?” then, project yourself forward a couple of years from now. Picture a perfect day in your life. What do you see in terms of your family, career, health, finances, and relationships and so on? Start writing! Try to capture your vision in words. Compare this with your life now. List the areas of your life that you will need to prioritize if you hope to fulfill your life’s ambitions.

Personal goal setting

Why is it important to set goals?  
Goal setting can help you to:

  • Determine your priorities;
  • Get organized;
  • Make decisions; and
  • Realize your dreams.

No one who has won an Olympic gold medal ever said ‘I don’t know what I want to achieve in life’. Whether they are Olympic athletes or successful students, winners all have the vision and the motivation to make the best of their potential and talents. They find ways to achieve their goals and commit themselves to turning their dreams into reality. Effective goal setting is the starting point to all meaningful achievement.

What is a goal?   
A goal is a dream or ambition you plan to achieve. Something you would like to do or would like to be. Your goals must be worthwhile and exciting enough to challenge you until the end. They must also be realistic and organized into manageable tasks, each with a deadline fixed to it. There’s no point in dreaming of retiring at 40 if you’re not prepared to put in the work to achieve it!
Some goals are short-term, such as passing your exams. Some goals are long term. Such as making success of your career. Setting long –term goals gives you a vision of your future that shapes all other aspects of your decision – making. For example, if your major life goal is to become a politician, you may decide that it would be more beneficial for you to join the debating society at school instead of the choir.

SMART goals  
Many experts agree that goals should be set in terms of the acronym ‘SMART’, which stands for:
Specific – so you know exactly what you are striving for;
Measurable – so you can tell when the goal has been reached;
Action-oriented – to indicate an activity that will produce results;
Realistic – practical and achievable; and
Timed-based – has a define deadline for completion.

Steps for goal setting  
Having goals in your life is important. For some people, merely creating goals brings about a positive change. When you set a goal, you are creating an exciting challenge for yourself. To make sure that you meet that challenge, you will need to do four things.

Step 1: Decide on what you Want
Make a list of you goals, both short-term and long term- term. Once you’ve identified your goals, you’ll already be closer to getting what you want out of life. Writing down your goals and placing them where they will be seen often will help you to stay focused. Your fridge, bathroom mirror or desk are just a few of the places where you could keep your goals in sight. Goals can relate to many different areas of your life, for example, your schoolwork, career, family, health and personal appearance.

Step 2: Plan how you’re going to achieve your goals
Now that you know what goals are, decide on the actions that you will need to take to make your dreams a reality. Because it’s not possible to achieve everything at once, it’s always a good idea to prioritize your goals and then break them down into manageable tasks. For example, losing 10 kilograms seems overwhelming, but losing a kilogram a month for 10 months is something you can definitely do!

Step 3: Commit to your goals
Success depends on your willingness to put in the effort and make the necessary sacrifices to reach your goals. Act on your plan and review your goals regularly. You may find that you have to change your plan or your goal itself depending on circumstances. Whatever you do, don’t give up.
As long as your goals are realistic and you’re prepared to put in the work to reach them, you’ll get there in the end. It may just take a little longer than you expected.

Step 4: Enjoy the satisfaction of your success
When you have reached a goal, take the time to reflect on what you have done. The process of achieving goals gives you confidence and promotes self-belief. You will then be able to set higher and more challenging goals.

If you decide to, you can live a life that is an inspiration others. How? Simply by making wise decisions today about how you’re going to live in the next five years and beyond. The strange truth is that by not making decisions, you’ve already made a decision, haven’t you? You’ve decided to allow yourself to be swayed by circumstances instead of taking control of your own future. Will today be the day you begin to plan for a meaningful future? The first step towards planning your future is to be true to yourself. The next step is to realize that your future belongs to you – it is yours to shape as you choose.
A life that you cannot be define does not worth living, but in this world some are still where they are because they aren’t able to make decision of their own they depend on what others maketh for them.
None earth can define your life (decision) the definition lies within you and only you alone can unreach that which is in you so focus make decision and plan towards it.

Decision making tips  
You create yourself with your choices. Your choice of thoughts, words and behavior is the key to who you are.
Just as people are different, so are their styles of decision making. Do you realize that you are the person you are today as a result of all the decision made in your life up until now? As you prepare to leave school, you will find that there are more opportunities for making your own decisions. Here are some tips to help you to improve your decision-making skills.
Do your decision making on paper. Make notes so that you can consider all the relevant information.
Write down the pros and cons of each choice. This clarifies your thinking and makes from a better decision.
Brainstorming solutions with others will help you to gain fresh ideas and a new perspective.
Rehearse in your mind how you will go about implementing your choice and imagine what the result could be
Before implementing what appears to be the best choice, assess the risk by asking:”what could go wrong with this alternative?”
Trust yourself to make a decision and then take responsibility for the outcome.
Once you’ve made a decision and have started to implement it, don’t look back. Put the “what if’s” aside and do it with commitment. Be aware of how the decision is currently affecting you and focus on your next move.
Never regret a decision. It was the right thing to do at the time. Now focus on what is right at this time.    [Remember this that ‘what is right is not always convenient and that which might be inconvenient may be right’]

Making better decisions   
Determination, persistence and vision all play a part in planning a bright future.
Life can be viewed as a constant series of decisions. Only by making rational decisions do we take control of our lives. Anthony Robbins, in his best-seller awaken the giant within, offers some insights into the importance of decision-making. Here is a summary of his guidelines for making better decisions.

  • Remember the true power of decisions: it is through your decisions that change is brought about in your life and your future is shaped.
  • Realize that the hardest step to achieving anything is making a true commitment: carrying out your commitment is often easier than the decision itself. So, once you’ve made your decision to do something, get on with it and take action!
  • Make decisions often: the more decisions you make, the better you’re going to get at it. [“Any finished line is a begin of a new ray” – Young Money]
  • Learn from your decisions: there’s no way around it. Sometimes your decision will turn out to be bad ones. Rather than focusing on the short-term setback, choose instead to use the experience to make better decisions in the future.
  • Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible but stay flexible in your approach: stick to your decisions, but accept that there is more than one way of getting what you want out of life. Sometimes it is better to keep your options open, than to follow a set plan rigidly.
  • Enjoying making decisions: your decision have the power to set in motion a series of actions that can bring about the future you’ve always dreamt of having. If you really want your life to be successful, you need to expect this to happen!

Pitfalls to watch out for when making decisions
Be careful not to make a decision that is:
impulsive;
made only to please others;
based on insufficient information;
in conflict with your values and priorities; and
likely to cause harm to either yourself of others.

Dealing with personal problems

Accept the good with the bad  
Self-esteem is built on the knowledge that you can overcome personal difficulties.
Highs and lows. Good times and bad. Pleasure and pain. To be truly alive, you need to experience both the joys and the suffering that come with being human. You may know of people who try to ignore or downplay their personal problems. You may even be one of those people. The reality is that overcoming difficulties is what builds character in a person. Many people don’t discover their own inner strength until a major problem or life – threatening situation forces them to rise to the challenge. Then have no choice but to work towards a solution. The next time you find yourself in a tough spot, decide to make a difference and take action, no matter how difficult it may seem at the time.

Change your behavior,
Change your life   
A problem is, by definition, something that is difficult to deal with.
A personal problem can be, amongst other things:

  • Emotional;
  • Physical;
  • social;
  • spiritual; or
  • financial.

The good news is that once you realize that the root of all your problems is human behavior, then you will be in a position to make changes in your life! You can choose to change your behavior and in this way set positive consequences in motion, instead of causing further problems.
For example, someone with a drug problem can take steps to overcome the habit by first making a conscious decision to change his or her behavior.
When confronted with a personal problem, you need to:

  • analyze the situation;
  • work out what must be done; and
  • act on your decision.

A 7-step method for dealing with personal problems  
Step 1
Acknowledge that you have a problem. By doing so, you can begin to make changes.

Step 2
Accept responsibility for finding the best solution.

Step 3
Gather all the facts. Put pen to paper and describe the problem in detail.

Step 4
List all the possible solutions. Do not limit your thinking. Allow your mind free reign.

Step 5
List the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.

Step 6
Write an action plan, giving details of what you will do.

Step 7
Make a commitment to doing whatever it takes to sort out the problem. Follow through.
A word of advice  
With personal problems, you should try to consider all possible viewpoints and solutions. Psychologists say that you should pay special attention to those aspects that you are most reluctant to consider or would prefer to avoid for some reason. Take the first step and the next steps will be easier. By facing up to the difficulties in your life, you will learn some important lessons and grow stronger as a person.

There are times in all of our lives when we need support to help us cope with the challenges we are facing. Take action. Speak to a trusted family member, friend, teacher, school counselor or pastor.
